Game Overview
Round Table is a collectible trading card game that immerses players in the Arthurian era, where they assume the roles of British leaders vying for the title of Supreme Monarch. Players recruit knights, grant them titles, give them with legendary equipment, and send them on quests to bring regions of Britain under their control. The game offers a blend of strategic depth and accessible mechanics, making it suitable for players of varying skill levels.
Key Features
Random Construction
Round Table features over 254 cards in the base edition. Each 72-card starter deck is uniquely crafted to be playable from the box, meaning players don’t have to purchase more cards to play the game. The starter deck contains all of the lands, regions, and main cards the player requires. Additional Treasure Packs of 18 cards can be purchased to expand a player’s collection and allow for additional customization of the base starter deck. There are four rarities of cards with a blend of powerful cards among all of the rarities.
Accessible Mechanics
The game is designed with straightforward rules that are easy to grasp, allowing new players to quickly understand the gameplay while providing enough depth to keep experienced players engaged. Designers placed a strong emphasis on every player taking actions to ensure that all players gets a chance to do something.
Strategic Depth
Players must make thoughtful decisions regarding which knights to recruit, how to equip them, and which quests to undertake, balancing risk and reward to achieve victory. The game takes a few rounds to establish itself but develops very quickly into a myriad of different opportunities for players to control the battlefield. How players construct their decks determines how the game progresses in mid- and late-game scenarios. The mechanics around Quests and Redirects also allow players to move Knights around the battlefield, opening opportunities to gain victory points (Renown) or prevent their opponents from enacting their plans.
Engaging Theme
Set in the rich and legendary world of King Arthur, the game brings a captivating narrative that enhances the overall experience. Many Knights from the Arthurian legends are included but we also added in Knights from other parts of the world to expand the mythology. We included a number of Quests and Redirects directly from Arthurian legends as well as Celtic and Scandinavian sources. All of the regions players vie to control are actual locations in England and Wales, providing a real-life geographical linkage. Future expansions will focus heavily on other parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa as well as the Fey realm, filled with magic and chaos.
Balanced Gameplay
The game emphasizes balanced mechanics, striving to eliminate issues like “infinite combos” and “first-turn kills” that can affect other games, ensuring an engaging and fair experience for all participants. Play is divided by seasons of the year and every player can act in every season, meaning that all players take actions. This allows for a much faster pace of play and higher level of engagement, but also ensures that one player isn’t “running away” with a quick succession of game-ending moves. While the trading card game aspect ensures that players have different sets of cards from which to build their decks, each deck is carefully constructed to be playable out of the box. This means that players don’t have to have a lot of money to build competitive decks; rather, it ensures the game is approachable by anyone.
Conclusion
Round Table TCG exemplifies the qualities of a Constructible Game Randomized game by offering strong random but balanced starter decks with strategic gameplay set within an engaging theme. Its balance of simplicity and depth makes it an ideal candidate for the Origins Game Fair Awards in this category.
